I knew I wanted to come back and photograph in Val D’Orcia the second I stepped foot in Pienza. Spencer and I spent the day roaming through ancient towns before making our way down to Podere di Poggio Manzuoli- the hills where the movie “Gladiator” was filmed.
We walked- not speaking- on a long dirt road that twisted between the kind of rolling hills that exist in dreams and Dell desk top screen savers. Spencer played the “Gladiator” sound track and ran his hands through some reeds, before I shoved my backpack, camera, and miscellaneous belongings into his unsuspecting arms and yelled,
“Hold these. I need to do something.”
That something was sprinting off the path and through the hills of Val D’Orcia until I was fully out of breath. For the record I made it approximately 120 seconds before that happened. Quality not quantity.
Val D’Orcia is the kind of place I needed to run around in to prove to my brain it was real. I can confirm, it was, it is, and getting to come back to photograph a piece of Sam and Roberta’s love story at Agriturismo Podere Spedalone in Val D’Orcia was a gift.
Give me some 600 year old olive trees, two people with a steadfast, quiet love, a venue that’s full of history, an incredible team and it’s a good day.
I hope your eyeballs enjoy looking at it, as much as mine did documenting.
